Description

Exim is a mail transfer agent for Unix systems connected to the Internet. It is a monolithic MTA designed to be a command line compatible drop-in replacement for Sendmail.

Exim is an excellent mailer for an ISP, as its control and flexibility are very good and its requeueing and retry algorithms are very powerful. Exim's configuration syntax is well documented.

Install

As a binary package — by origin, or by package name:

pkg install mail/exim
pkg install exim

From the ports tree:

cd /usr/ports/mail/exim/ && make install clean

To depend on this port in another port's Makefile:

RUN_DEPENDS=	exim>0:mail/exim

Packages

The version each package repository carries. “-” means the repository builds no package of it, “n/a” that there is no such repository.

Message after installing

The following documentation has been installed:

man exim -> Exim options (command line)
/usr/local/share/doc/exim/spec.txt -> Exim Specification (User Guide)
  /usr/local/share/doc/exim/filter.txt  -> Exim Filter Specification (for end-users)

Postscript, PDF, HTML and texinfo versions of these documents can be
installed via one of the mail/exim-doc-* ports.

An online version as well as a comprehensive FAQ and a mailing list
archive is available at:

  http://www.exim.org/

Descriptions of new features not available it the manual, and a listing
of all changes, including bug fixes are documented in:

  /usr/local/share/doc/exim/NewStuff
  /usr/local/share/doc/exim/ChangeLog

To use Exim instead of sendmail on startup:

*) Clear the sendmail queue and stop the sendmail daemon.
*) Adjust mailer.conf(5) as appropriate.
*) Set the 'sendmail_enable' rc.conf(5) variable to 'NONE'.
*) Set the 'daily_status_include_submit_mailq' and
   'daily_clean_hoststat_enable' periodic.conf(5)
   variables to 'NO'.
*) Consider setting 'daily_queuerun_enable' and
   'daily_submit_queuerun' to "NO" in periodic.conf(5),
if you intend to manage queue runners / deliveries closely.
*) Set the 'exim_enable' rc.conf(5) variable to 'YES'.
*) Start exim with '/usr/local/etc/rc.d/exim start'.

You may also want to configure newsyslog(8) to rotate Exim log files:

/var/log/exim/mainlog	mailnull:mail 640 7 * @T00 ZN
/var/log/exim/rejectlog	mailnull:mail 640 7 * @T00 ZN

Additional scripts to help upgrading are installed in:

  /usr/local/share/examples/exim

85ba298b7e Baptiste Daroussin databases/lmdb: allow to install both 0.x and 1.x together
LMDB 1.0 and the legacy 0.9 ABI cannot be mixed, the datanase format are incompatibles as well. Rename or relocate everything databases/lmdb0 installs so that it no longer overlaps with databases/lmdb: - the utilities are now mdb_copy0, mdb_dump0, mdb_load0 and mdb_stat0 - the header is include/lmdb0/lmdb.h - the linker name is liblmdb0.so, the shared object keeps its ABI name liblmdb.so.0 so already linked programs are unaffected - the pkg-config file is lmdb0.pc A compatibility prefix holding the previous layout is also installed under ${PREFIX}/lmdb0/ (include/, lib/ and libdata/pkgconfig/) so that build systems which expect to find lmdb.h and -llmdb relative to a single directory only need a path change. Now all ports should migrate to lmdb 1.X and use the lmdb 0.9 port to ease …

5d6b7ba559 Dima Panov mail/exim: daemon fails to create notifier socket on start if no correct exit (+)
Since recent version (e.g. 4.98) exim successfully creates notifier socket file in FreeBSD. But if file already exists during exim start it's just ignored with error message in log. Without notifier socket exim cannot check if there is already running exim daemon with e.g. such condition: ${if eq {$queue_size} {} }. Add socket file removing before daemon start. exim_notifier_socket variable is added for notifier_socket setting overriding in exim configuration. PR: 281615 Notified by: vvd
