Description

Synapse is a reference "homeserver" implementation of Matrix from the core development team at matrix.org, written in Python/Twisted. It is intended to showcase the concept of Matrix and let folks see the spec in the context of a codebase and let you run your own homeserver and generally help bootstrap the ecosystem.

Install

Binary package:

pkgin install matrix-synapse

From pkgsrc:

cd /usr/pkgsrc/chat/matrix-synapse && make install clean

c91a608886 gdt chat/matrix-synapse: Update to 1.161.0
Tested on NetBSD 10 amd64 with 2026Q3 environment. Packaging changes: - use maturin's tool.mk, to get the part that respects MAKE_JOBS - patch mio, which had a pre-NetBSD10 type for kevent.udata, a latent bug apparently exposed by a new libc crate, but fixable on its own merits by code inspection. # Synapse 1.162.0 (2026-09-29) ## Features - Raise default room version to "12". Contributed by @jason-famedly @famedly. ([\#20130](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/20130)) - Limit the number of end-to-end encryption one-time keys stored per device to 500 per algorithm, rejecting uploads which would exceed the limit with a `400 Bad Request`. ([\#20162](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/20162)) …

Tested on NetBSD 10 amd64 with 2026Q3 environment. # Synapse 1.161.0 (2026-09-15) ## Features - Don't validate signatures with unknown algorithms for master keys, and allow updates to signatures. ([\#19915](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/19915)) - [MSC4140: Cancellable delayed events](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals/pull/4140): Add an endpoint for getting a single delayed event. ([\#19926](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/19926)) - Add experimental support for letting application services proxy namespaces in the C-S and S-S API as per MSC4512. ([\#19972](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/19972)) …
b2992e19cc gdt chat/matrix-synapse: Align dependencies to upstream harder
Bump a few versions, and add a dependency on pyparsing, which shouldn't be present, but upstream has it in pyproject.toml because synapse depends on packaging and packaging used to need pyparsing, but apparently packaging needed a newer version than it said it needed. Reported upstream. Tested on NetBSD 10 amd64.

Tested on NetBSD 10 amd64 with 2026Q2 environment. # Synapse 1.160.0 (2026-09-02) ## Features - Add experimental support for [MSC4502](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals/pull/4502): Targeted and unrestricted room member queries. ([\#19974](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/19974)) - Add optional support for [MSC4262: Profile Updates for Sliding Sync](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals/pull/4262). Currently defaults to disabled, and is limited to local users only for the sync results. ([\#20003](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/20003)) - Allow specifying multiple `action_name` and `status` query parameters when listing scheduled tasks via the admin API. Tested on NetBSD 10 amd64 with 2026Q2 environment. # Synapse 1.158.0 (2026-08-04) ## Features - Change default room version to 11, implementing [MSC4239](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals/pull/4239) as part of Matrix v1.14. ([\#18680](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/18680)) - Add animation support to the media thumbnailer, gated behind the `animated` query parameter on the thumbnail endpoint (defaults to off). ([\#18831](https://github.com/element-hq/synapse/issues/18831)) - Return `M_USER_LIMIT_EXCEEDED` error code for media upload limits from [MSC4335](https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals/pull/4335).
