Description

pipx is a tool to help you install and run end-user applications written in Python. It's roughly similar to macOS's brew, JavaScript's npx, and Linux's apt.

It's closely related to pip. In fact, it uses pip, but is focused on installing and managing Python packages that can be run from the command line directly as applications.

pipx enables you to:

  • Expose CLI entrypoints of packages ("apps") installed to isolated environments with the install command. This guarantees no dependency conflicts and clean uninstalls!
  • Easily list, upgrade, and uninstall packages that were installed with pipx.
  • Run the latest version of a Python application in a temporary environment with the run command.

Best of all, pipx runs with regular user permissions.

1.18.2 Bugfixes Accept absolute file:/// URLs as package specs, such as pipx install file:///wheels/tool-1-py3-none-any.whl. In a terminal, show the pipx spinner again during installs and upgrades instead of the full pip or uv log, which –verbose still streams. Installer errors are still printed on failure. Print the installer error once when a pipx upgrade –verbose or pip pipx install –verbose fails, instead of repeating it after the live output. Stop an -all command on Ctrl-C even when the interpreter drops the interrupt, which happens when the signal handler runs inside a weakref callback or a finalizer. 1.18.1 Bugfixes Stop pip and uv when Ctrl-C lands early, instead of hanging.

1.17.2 - 2026-09-01 Bugfixes Fix KeyError stderr noise when installing packages in Python3.15. 1.17.1 - 2026-08-30 Bugfixes pipx environment now reports PIPX_MAX_LOGS, and pipx environment –value PIPX_MAX_LOGS no longer exits with invalid choice. Miscellaneous internal changes 1.17.0 - 2026-08-29 Features Add PIPX_COOLDOWN, a default for –cooldown on install, install-all, inject, upgrade, upgrade-all and run, so one release-age policy covers every command. An explicit –cooldown still wins, –cooldown 0 opts a single command out, and a locked install ignores the variable rather than failing. Bugfixes …
