Description

LFT, short for Layer Four Traceroute, is a sort of 'traceroute' that often works much faster (than the commonly-used Van Jacobson method) and goes through many configurations of packet-filter based firewalls. More importantly, LFT implements numerous other features including AS number lookups, loose source routing, netblock name lookups, et al.

lft 4.03 / WhoB 4.03 ---------------------- - NetBSD: interface lookup by address found nothing (SIOCGIFCONF entries are fixed-size there, unlike FreeBSD/macOS), so LFT could not pick its capture interface. lft_getifname now uses getifaddrs() where available and strides the ioctl list correctly everywhere else. - NetBSD: lft aborted at startup ("_res is not supported for multi-threaded programs") because c-ares links libpthread and NetBSD's libc forbids _res there; the glibc-only resolver timeout tweak is now skipped on NetBSD. - Build: objects depend on the generated config header, so a re-configure rebuilds them.

lft 4.02 / WhoB 4.02 ---------------------- - Fixed -r (RIPE RIS) lookups attributing ASNs to the wrong hops. RIS added header lines our bulk reply parser did not expect; the parser now walks the reply block by block and handles "No entries found" correctly. - illumos/SmartOS: builds again (sys/sockio.h, alloca.h, termios.h) and traces no longer hang on a silent hop. - All platforms: the capture loop now waits on the pcap descriptor with select() instead of polling, so timeouts and retries run even where libpcap's non-blocking read blocks (illumos DLPI); lower idle CPU elsewhere. - Whois failures now say what failed (DNS, connect, timeout, empty reply) instead of a blanket "No reply", in whob and in lft -V. Whois connects time …

Changes since 3.8, briefly: protocol, firewall-traversal and reliability fixes; IPv6 end to end; ECMP path enumeration (--ecmp); a path-MTU discovery mode; JSON/XML/GeoJSON/KML/SVG/GraphViz/Mermaid output; an ncurses --watch mode with a path-change detector; whob --annotate; and a hardened privilege model with bounds-checked parsers. Also install 'whob'. From Victor O. in PR 60767.
