strongSwan -- Heap-based buffer overflow in eap-mschapv2 plugin due to improper handling of failure request packets
· CVE-2025-62291 · VuXML entry
Xu Biang reports: The eap-mschapv2 plugin doesn't correctly check the length of an EAP-MSCHAPv2 Failure Request packet on the client, which can cause an integer underflow that leads to a crash and, depending on the compiler options, even a heap-based buffer overflow that's potentially exploitable for remote code execution. Affected are all strongSwan versions since 4.2.12.
Affected versions
- strongswan >= 4.2.12 < 6.0.3
By system
0 still vulnerable, 1 fixed. Where VuXML applies (FreeBSD, DragonFly, FreeBSD's derivatives) a port is vulnerable while its version is in a range; pkgsrc says itself whether it lists a CVE of this advisory; OpenBSD and MidnightBSD keep no list this site reads, so their row is only an estimate: FreeBSD's ranges applied to upstream's version.
| System | Port | Version | State | Fixed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FreeBSD | security/strongswan | 6.1.0 | fixed | (321 days after) |
| OpenBSD | net/strongswan | 5.9.1p0 | in range, by version | |
| NetBSD | wip/strongswan | 5.7.1 | not listed |
