Description
Apiary is a distributed virtualisation control plane for FreeBSD.
It manages a colony of "Combs" - FreeBSD hosts - and on each of them runs the bhyve virtual machines, jails, ZFS datasets, HAST-replicated disks and firewall rules that make up the colony's workload. The control plane is split across four daemons plus two operator tools:
raftd the Raft consensus voter; one per Comb, a quorum of them decides every cluster-wide state change managerd the colony's API server; owns the desired state and reconciles it onto each Comb frontend the web UI and the session-based login surface restshimd a REST translation of managerd's RPC API, for external tooling apiaryctl the operator command line apiaryinstall host preparation: packages, kernel modules and the network configuration a Comb needs before it can join
An MCP connector (apiary-mcp) is installed alongside them, providing a read-only Model Context Protocol view of a Comb for external AI clients. It is disabled by default.
