Description

GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable, free/libre text editor. At its core is an interpreter for Emacs Lisp, a dialect of the Lisp programming language with extensions to support text editing.

The features of GNU Emacs include:

  • content-aware editing modes, including syntax coloring, for many file types
  • complete built-in documentation, including a tutorial for new users
  • full Unicode support for nearly all human scripts
  • powerful customizability, using Emacs Lisp code or a graphical interface
  • a vast ecosystem of functionality beyond text editing, including a project planner, mail and news reader, debugger interface, calendar, even a psychotherapist, and more
  • a packaging system for downloading and installing extensions.

Install

As a binary package — by origin, or by package name:

pkg install editors/emacs
pkg install emacs

From the ports tree:

cd /usr/ports/editors/emacs/ && make install clean

To depend on this port in another port's Makefile:

RUN_DEPENDS=	emacs>0:editors/emacs

Packages

The version each package repository carries. “-” means the repository builds no package of it, “n/a” that there is no such repository.

Message after installing

Emacs has been built with support for native compilation. Third-party
elisp (from ELPA or FreeBSD packages) will be native-compiled at
runtime. You can configure the number of subprocesses used for native
compilation via the native-comp-async-jobs-number variable.

To disable native compilation:
1. Add (setq native-comp-jit-compilation nil) to your early init file.
2. Exit Emacs and remove the cache directory (often ~/.emacs.d/eln-cache).

A small number of trampoline .eln files may still be generated even with
native compilation disabled. These are created when primitives are
advised or redefined in your configuration, and are necessary to ensure
that Emacs's own native-compiled code respects those customizations.

f9566b8062 Joseph Mingrone editors/emacs: Fix native compilation with canna flavor
isearch-ext.el is a file that comes with the canna patch. Because it is preloaded, it was native-compiled during the bootstrap stage. This caused the native-lisp directory to be created, which in turn meant AOT for all other elisp was silently skipped. Fix this by adding isearch-ext to native-comp-bootstrap-deny-list, so it is native-compiled later along with the rest of the elisp. Sponsored by: The FreeBSD Foundation
