Description

OpenEXR is a high dynamic-range (HDR) image file format developed by Industrial Light & Magic for use in computer imaging applications.

OpenEXR is used by ILM on all motion pictures currently in production. The first movies to employ OpenEXR were Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Men in Black II, Gangs of New York, and Signs. Since then, OpenEXR has become ILM's main image file format.

OpenEXR's features include: * Higher dynamic range and color precision than existing 8- and 10-bit image file formats. * Support for 16-bit floating-point, 32-bit floating-point, and 32-bit integer pixels. The 16-bit floating-point format, called "half", is compatible with the half data type in NVIDIA's Cg graphics language and is supported natively on their new GeForce FX and Quadro FX 3D graphics solutions. * Multiple lossless image compression algorithms. Some of the included codecs can achieve 2:1 lossless compression ratios on images with film grain. * Extensibility. New compression codecs and image types can easily be added by extending the C++ classes included in the OpenEXR software distribution. New image attributes (strings, vectors, integers, etc.) can be added to OpenEXR image headers without affecting backward compatibility with existing OpenEXR applications.

Add post-release upstream patch to fix build on NetBSD, instead of local patches. Upstream now has NetBSD CI! 3.5.2 (October 2, 2026) Patch release that introduces the use of OpenJPH's built-in LUT to apply the decode/encode transfer function for lossy LJ2K compression. :warning: WARNING: EXR files written by OpenEXR v3.5.0 and v3.5.1 using lossy LJ2K compression lack the LUT in their codestream and should be regenerated. This v3.5.2 release includes a backwards compatibility fallback so that such files can be successfully decoded, but for best results, please regenerate any files using LJ2K written by v3.5.0 and v3.5.1. Also in this release: * Prebuilt wheels Python 3.14. * Fix for a bug when when statically linking when libdeflate, zstd, or …

## Version 3.5.1 (September 25, 2026) Patch release that addresses a security vulnerability in ZSTD: - fix heap buffer overflow in ZSTD deep scanline decoding Also, the v3.5.0 release incorrectly identified the `OPENEXR_VERSION_RELEASE_TYPE` and associated `OPENEXR_PACKAGE_NAME` as `-dev`. ### Merged Pull Requests * [2669](https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/pull/2669) Fix heap buffer overflow in ZSTD deep scanline decoding (by @cary-ilm/Cary Phillips) ## Version 3.5.0 (September 21, 2026) * Support for lossless compression via [Zstandard](https://github.com/facebook/zstd) - Introduces `ZSTD_COMPRESSION/EXR_COMPRESSION_ZSTD` enum - Features a custom data prep stage that includes ByteShuffle, optional Delta Encoding, and custom data reordering. …

## Version 3.4.15 (August 21, 2026) v3.4.15 fixes two memory issues when parsing IDManifests. Corrupt or maliciously formed OpenEXR images could trigger excessive memory allocation, but only in code which decodes the idmanifest attribute. Other code is unaffected, even when handling files with idmanifest attributes

## Version 3.4.14 (August 6, 2026) v3.4.14 is a security-focused patch release. It fixes 15 CVEs plus a broad set of additional hardening changes uncovered by the same fuzzing/audit effort. For each of these vulnerabilities, an attacker's vector is a maliciously crafted `.exr` file that must be opened by a victim, whether through the OpenEXR/OpenEXRUtil C++ libraries, the command-line tools (`exrmetrics`, `exrmultiview`, `exrmultipart`), or the PyOpenEXR Python bindings. The primary flaw for most of the CVEs is **memory corruption** — heap buffer overflows and out-of-bounds reads/writes — which at minimum crashes the reading process (denial of service) and in several cases could plausibly be leveraged for information disclosure or, in the worst cases, arbitrary code execution. …
